Shadow Actor 4: A Metal Mask Between Mime and Cubism
With "Shadow Actor 4," I explored the theatricality of the human face through a geometric and silent prism. This sculpture stands at the crossroads between the silent expression of mime and the structural deconstruction of cubism. The face does not seek perfect realism but an emotional truth captured in a lace of steel and bronze that fragments the light to better reveal the expression.
The drip fusion technique allows drawing planes and edges that recall stage masks, where every void becomes a wrinkle of expression or a character trait. The actor seems to emerge from the darkness, frozen in a moment of reflection or performance. The bronze highlights the reliefs with a precious warmth, contrasting with the rigor of the steel. It is a piece from the Intimate range that invites contemplation of the mystery of identity, a tribute to those who inhabit the stage from behind the scenes.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Why this reference to mime and cubism? The influence of mime is found in the frozen and universal aspect of the expression, while cubism inspires the fragmentation of the face into metallic planes. This approach gives an architectural and timeless dimension to the human physiognomy.
How is this facial lace made? I use the dripping technique (manual drip fusion). Without a mold, I build the volume of the face by melting steel and bronze. This process creates an openwork framework that gives the sculpture its impression of lightness and transparency.
Is this a unique work? Yes, absolutely. Each "Shadow Actor" is an original creation. The arrangement of the fused metal drops and the shades of the patina are impossible to reproduce identically twice, making it an exclusive collector’s item.
Is the sculpture signed? Yes, the work is signed Philippe Buil directly in the material. It comes with a paper certificate of authenticity guaranteeing its artisanal origin and unique character.
Does the work require special maintenance? The steel and bronze are protected by a high-quality professional varnish. To preserve the sculpture’s shine, occasional dusting with a soft-bristle brush is enough to clean the lace’s interstices well.
