With this metal skull sculpture and gold leaf, I wanted to confront what disappears and what seems to last, in a direct tension between material and symbol.
H2 — A vanitas in a frontal reading
In Crane CLVII, the skull is presented in a more frontal reading, almost like an apparition. This is not a volume to be circled around, but an image to be received, immediate.
This frontality strengthens the impact of the subject. The gaze is directly confronted with the form, with no escape. The skull becomes a silent presence, placed facing us, like an obvious truth.
The sculpture thus fits into the tradition of vanitas: a reflection on time, finitude, and the human condition. But here, this idea is reduced to the essential, without detour or staging.
Gold and metal: a tension between the ephemeral and the imperishable
The sculpture combines steel and gold leaf, creating a strong and immediate contrast. The steel, worked into metal lace, gives an openwork, pierced, almost fragile material.
Gold, on the other hand, captures the light and asserts its presence. It evokes what does not deteriorate, what passes through time without changing.
This opposition creates a direct tension: the skull → what is destined to disappear and the gold → what seems to remain
But this coexistence raises a question: is what shines truly durable, or just an illusion against time?
The light highlights this dialogue, revealing in turn the density of the gold and the fragility of the metal structure. The sculpture then becomes a point of balance between disappearance and permanence.
