Discover a woman’s bust in metal lace, where the strength of steel meets the delicacy of ancient illuminated manuscripts. With Pavarti the Illuminated, I invite you to contemplate a face that seems to emerge from the material, between transparency, shadow, and light, like an apparition born from a precious manuscript.
Metal lace inspired by medieval illuminated manuscripts
For this sculpture, I worked with steel to create an openwork form that appears light and fragile. The metal lace allows the volume to breathe: it suggests the contours of the face and bust without enclosing them in a solid mass. The empty spaces become as important as the material, allowing light to pass through the work and reveal its lines from different angles.
The arabesques that run across the sculpture evoke the interlacing patterns, ornaments, and delicate motifs of medieval manuscripts. I chose to emphasize some of these lines with a finish of gilded metal leaf. This metallic gilding adds luminous accents that contrast with the dark texture of the steel. It does not seek to conceal the material: it reveals it in another way, drawing the eye toward the design of the interlacing patterns.
Pavarti the Illuminated, a contemporary sculpture between shadow and light
With Pavarti the Illuminated, I seek to bring two worlds into dialogue: the roughness of metal and the fineness of ancient ornamentation. The silhouette seems to carry the memory of another era, while the metal lace technique fully places this work within a contemporary sculptural approach. The golden lines recall the richness of illuminated manuscripts without reproducing any specific historical motif.
This work belongs to my Collection Works range and to my Small-scale Body Collection. I imagine it in an interior where it can be observed up close to appreciate its details, but also from a distance, allowing the silhouette and plays of transparency to emerge. Depending on the lighting and viewing angle, the golden arabesques reveal themselves differently. It is this encounter between material, light, and delicacy that gives Pavarti the Illuminated its distinctive presence.

Learn more about the sculpture “Pavarti the Illuminated”
What is the Pavarti the Illuminated sculpture?
Pavarti the Illuminated is a contemporary woman’s bust made using metal lace. This sculpture combines the openwork texture of steel with arabesques highlighted by a gilded metal leaf finish, creating a dialogue between material, transparency, and light.
What technique is used to create Pavarti the Illuminated?
The sculpture is made using the metal lace technique, which creates an openwork structure and draws shapes through lines and empty spaces. Working with steel gives rise to a sculptural silhouette that appears both solid and light.
What materials make up Pavarti the Illuminated?
This work is made of steel. The gilded sections are covered with gilded metal leaf, highlighting certain motifs and arabesques. This is a gilded metallic finish, not solid-gold gilding.
Why is this sculpture called Pavarti the Illuminated?
The name Pavarti the Illuminated echoes the world of ancient illuminated manuscripts. The golden arabesques and interlacing patterns that seem to emerge from the material evoke the precious ornaments of medieval manuscripts, reinterpreted in a contemporary sculpture.
What is the artistic inspiration behind Pavarti the Illuminated?
The work is inspired by the graphic richness of medieval art, particularly its interlacing patterns and ornamental motifs. It does not reproduce a particular illuminated manuscript; instead, it captures its decorative spirit and brings it into dialogue with the raw, openwork texture of metal.
Which collection does Pavarti the Illuminated belong to?
Pavarti the Illuminated belongs to the Collection Works range and the Small-scale Body Collection. It forms part of a sculptural exploration of the female body, metal lace, and the transformation of material.
How does light transform the appearance of this sculpture?
The openwork structure allows light to pass through the metal lace. Shadows are cast around the bust, while the golden accents draw the eye to the arabesques. The appearance of the work therefore changes according to the lighting and viewpoint.
Where can a metal lace woman’s bust like Pavarti the Illuminated be displayed?
This sculpture can find its place in a living room, library, office, or collection space. A plain background and lighting that reveals the details of the lace make it easier to appreciate the transparencies and contrasts between the steel and the gilded elements.
What distinguishes Pavarti the Illuminated from a classic bust?
Unlike a solid bust, Pavarti the Illuminated is built from a network of metal lines and open spaces. This structure gives the bust a distinctive presence, between volume and transparency, while the golden arabesques reinforce the ornamental dimension of the work.
How can the details of Pavarti the Illuminated be appreciated?
It is interesting to observe the sculpture from the front, in profile, and from a three-quarter view to discover how the lines define the volume of the bust. Close observation also makes it possible to distinguish the metal lace motifs and the gilded metal leaf finishes.
