Sculpture representing a lion’s head made of steel lace and bronze: The Guardian of the Golden Lion
This lion’s head was born from a dialogue between my sculpture and a Parisian architectural memory.
The original model was created for the reception hall of Maison Albar Hotels – Le Vendome. This work, enhanced with gold leaf, is directly inspired by the lion that adorned the historic façade of the former Hôtel du Lion d’Or, whose memory the establishment preserves.
In this sculpture, I wanted to reinterpret this emblematic figure — a symbol of power and sovereignty — through my artistic language. Steel and bronze, materials associated with mass and solidity, become in my work a metal lace.
I seek to make the metal lose its heaviness. The material fragments, the solids open up, and the voids let light circulate. The gaze then passes through the sculpture as through a living weave, revealing a presence both strong and fragile.
The lion’s mane unfolds like an organic network, almost vegetal. It evokes for me the raw strength of the animal, but also a more unexpected dimension: an almost fragile lightness. This tension between power and delicacy is at the heart of my work.
In this search for an open sculpture, attentive to space and light, I feel close to certain explorations carried out by Julio González or Alexander Calder, who knew how to free sculpture from its mass to make it breathe.
Depending on the versions, the work can unfold in an almost monumental verticality or in a more concentrated presence, where the base evokes the lion’s claw, as if the animal still extended its strength into space.
More than a representation, I always seek an apparition:
a metal lion that, in the play of light and voids, seems to breathe.
