"With this Vanity, I wanted to sculpt the ultimate dialogue between the soul and time: an aluminum skull suspended above a metal flame, where tears of blood crystallize regret, remorse, or access to a transcendent truth."
The spirit above the blaze: a metaphysical ascent
In Vanity 89-21, the skull is not resting, it is carried. Mounted on a lacework structure of steel and bronze evoking a flame or an ascending breath, it seems to emerge from the blaze of existence. The contrast between aluminum — cold, clear, and almost ethereal — and the glowing base creates a strong visual tension: it is the spirit rising beyond destruction.
This work revisits the theme of Memento Mori with rare intensity. The skull’s slightly tilted posture suggests a consciousness looking back or awakening to a higher reality. It is not a sculpture about the end, but a sculpture about the transformation of being through the trial by fire.
The blood pigment: the indelible trace of emotion
The most striking element of this piece lies in the drips of red pigment marking the aluminum face. These traces, like tears of blood or stigmata, bring a human and tragic dimension to the cold metal. They embody the weight of regrets, the bite of remorse, but also purification through suffering.
The metal lace technique allows light to pass through the bronze and steel "flame," creating moving shadows that give the impression the base is truly in motion. The aluminum, with its luminous matte finish, draws the eye toward the center of reflection. Vanity 89-21 is a piece of confrontation, an object for deep meditation on the fragility of life and the power of truth.

What does the symbolism of this Vanity represent? It represents the transition between material life and spiritual consciousness. The skull (thought) is carried by a flame (vital or destructive energy), illustrating the passage to a truth that transcends death.
What is the meaning of the red pigment traces? The red pigment evokes blood and tears. It symbolizes the emotional imprint we leave behind: accumulated regrets, sincere remorse, or the price paid to reach a certain wisdom.
Why mix aluminum, steel, and bronze? Each metal has its function: aluminum for the clarity and lightness of the spirit, steel for structural strength, and bronze for the organic warmth of the flame. This mix creates a unique contrast of textures and colors.
How to display this work to reveal its full power? A zenithal light (coming from above) will enhance the dramatic aspect of the red drips, while lighting from below will make the metal lace flame "vibrate." It requires a calm space conducive to reflection.
Is this a unique work of art? Yes, absolutely. The work of the flame in drip form and the application of pigments are spontaneous gestures. Each Vanity is an exclusive piece, signed by the artist and accompanied by its certificate of authenticity.
